From Mississippi, we drove right through Arkansas and stayed one night in Oklahoma City. I am sad to say that the only thing I remember about Arkansas was the amount of squashed armadillos on the highway. Asked Paul to help a girl out but he had nothing to add. And Oklahoma City in August was simply too hot. We wandered a bit, had a bite, melted. On the way back to the nondiscript chain hotel, we came across a small wedding party. And here is my favorite memory of Oklahoma…
If I were getting married that day in OK, I would have done the exact same thing. My least favorite memory of Oklahoma? Worst huevos rancheros ever in a restaurant in a town with no people on it’s streets…or in it’s shops…or restaurants. That should have been our cue to drive straight through.
I know I am not being very fair to Arkansas and Oklahoma…I know if we had stayed longer things would have been different. And when I say different, I mean better. if you have a fun memory of either place you would like to share, that would be great.
And now. The state we took to the road for in the first place. Colorado. Where Paul and I met. Where Mountain Girl Organics was born. Where most of our friends are. Ahh, it’s good to be back in the ‘hood! And since every picture tells a story, and since I’m hoping for some rapport via your comments…here goes.
Stay tuned for Santa Fe, Kansas, Missouri, and Ohio! Oh, and the contest is still on – you have between now and tomorrow night (Sunday, 10/10/10 at 10:10pm) to leave a comment on any Caretaking Couple blog post! XOX, V&P
The only thing I wish about your trip in Colorado? That stop in Evergreen? I only wish that I got to see you a bit more. But hey, a girl can be in only one place at one time, right? It was WONDERFUL to see you when I did and I still love your blog!! and you, and Paul.
It was so WONDERFUL to see you as well, Denise. I knew the time would fly and that we would be sad not to have more time to spend with friends…guess we are fortunate to have those kinds of problems, eh?
My *new* old buttons and red slippers are going with to Tennessee, by the way : )I have an office pic in which they are featured that I have yet to download…boy did I get behind on my bloggins FAST! Lots to tell you…in the form of a letter…XOX
Sure looks like a good time was had by all! That is the written script for vacations; I just am sorry not everyone follows the script.
We are starting our own meandering on the 2nd of November. We are heading west (north and south) with two senior mini doxies and two young MinPins in a motorhome. We have not made one reservation (no tieing us down) and the only plan is to be in Ventura for Thanksgiving with OLD friends.
We will spend our 25th wedding anniversary somewhere along the way. Maybe even in Barstow (I KNOW!) where we did the deed on the 15th.
I think I’d like to do a blog but it looks like alot of work to set up; is it?
Yes, vacations ARE meant to be fun, Peg. I am getting better and better at making sure that they are just that (i.e. if I am not looking forward to going there…I don’t go there). Took me a while to figure that one out.
Yay for motorhome travel (she says as visions of Airstreams dance in her head). And when you say Ventura, I am thinking you are talking about Ventura, CA…the town I spent practically twenty years of my life in?!? Happy twenty-five years together, Peg and Owen!
And as for blogging goes…I would pick up a WordPress (or Typepad, etc) for Dummies and read through it. This will give you an idea of what is involved. I am not very tech savvy (although I learn a bit more just about every day) and there are times I get, ahem, a bit frustrated…but it is much fun and a great way to keep in touch with everyone.
You can always start out real simple (this blog is on the simpler side) and get fancier as you go. Or you can decide it isn’t worth your time and bag it. But I bet you will get hooked : ) Looking forward to Ventura Pics on the new blog, Peg!
I’ll find the book and see if I can handle it.
Yep Ventura, CA! A girl I grew up with is there. Our parents were best friends but we kids lost contact (life happened) until my mom died. I called Ellen and we yakked like we had just spoken to each other the day before (it had been 30 years). Her brother, Don, is in San Francisco. We will share Thanksgiving at Ellen’s home.
We’ll see. You will be the first to hear if I do it. Yours by the way looks really great!
Thanks, Peg! Feeling a bit nostalgic, now. Wouldn’t mind a walk down Main Street, Ventura. Must have walked that street a thousand times growing up. Would love to see the San Buenaventura Mission again.
Paul and I were there for a quick visit in 2006…just passing through. Didn’t have time for my favorite places.
I miss the Pier, and the Two Trees, and Arroyo Verde Park. And Corrales’ Mexican Food, and the Breakfast House right across from Ventura High. Ahh, the memories. I miss my old baby blue VW Squareback, too, come to think of it.
You will have a wonderful time there, I am sure. Sigh.
